Hyundai doubles carpooling in amateur sports: 672 metric tons of CO₂ saved in the 2022–2023 season

Hyundai is promoting sustainability in amateur sports in Germany, thereby taking another step toward a zero-emission future of mobility. In partnership with “SpielerPlus,” Germany’s largest sports team management app, Asia’s largest importer in Germany is calling on more than four million amateur athletes across 73 sports to carpool on their way to practice or games and thus reduce CO₂ emissions.

And it was a success: During the 2022–2023 season, 112,057 carpool groups were formed, resulting in an estimated reduction of over 672 metric tons of CO₂. In the previous season alone, a total of 57,241 carpool groups had literally driven home savings of over 343 metric tons of CO₂.

Hyundai: A longtime supporter of amateur sports

“The doubling of carpooling and CO₂ savings clearly underscores the commitment of amateur athletes to travel in an environmentally friendly way,” said Sebastian Carlin, Team Leader of Sports Marketing at Hyundai Motor Germany. “As a long-standing supporter of amateur sports in Germany, we continuously support and promote this initiative.”

In addition to its partnership with Bundesliga soccer club Eintracht Frankfurt—for which Hyundai is, among other things, electrifying the vehicle fleet—the company has for years focused on supporting amateur sports in all their forms—and not just on the field. “In addition to being a sign of sustainability, carpooling can also foster team spirit and a sense of camaraderie among participants and lead to greater enjoyment of their respective sports,” Carlin continued.

Through the “SpielerPlus” app, players from more than 250,000 participating teams can organize themselves and carpool to practice or games. “We are very pleased that, together with our long-standing partner Hyundai, we have once again sent a strong signal in support of a zero-emission future and can thus do our small part to help protect the climate.” "Furthermore, this partnership impressively demonstrates how brands can work together to contribute to sustainability in sports," said Marcel Hager, CEO of Sportplatz Media.
